ChatGPT Pro 500 Review: Is the $500 Plan Worth It? (Ultrafast, Limits, Alternatives)

OpenAI’s $500/month Pro 500 plan promises 25x Plus usage and Astra Ultrafast. See what you really get, how the 8x usage meter works, who benefits and cheaper options.

ChatGPT Pro 500 Review: Is the $500 Plan Worth It? (Ultrafast, Limits, Alternatives)

OpenAI announced its most expensive personal plan at DevDay on September 29, 2026: ChatGPT Pro 500, at $500 a month. Its pitch is the largest usage allowance OpenAI sells plus Astra Ultrafast, a speed mode for its flagship GPT-6 Astra. The catch is that the speed mode burns through that allowance quickly.

Here is what the plan includes, how the math works and who should (and shouldn’t) pay for it.

The Short Answer

For most people, no. Plus at $20 covers typical use, and Pro 100 or Pro 200 handles heavy use for much less. Pro 500 makes sense mainly for developers who run Codex all day, hit limits on the $200 plan and lose real money waiting on the model to generate.

One review scored it 3 out of 5, and several analysts reached the same conclusion: you’re buying more usage and speed, not new features.

What Pro 500 Includes

FeatureDetails
Price$500 per month, billed monthly only (no annual discount)
UsageAbout 25x the ChatGPT Plus allowance, the highest among Pro plans
UltrafastAstra Ultrafast in ChatGPT Work and Codex, available only on this tier among Pro plans
ModelsGPT-6 Astra and GPT-6 Pro, with the highest Pro-model limits
AgentsReportedly includes a Dot, OpenAI’s always-on personal agent
CreditsOnce your allowance runs out, you can buy credits, including for Ultrafast

Pro 500 is not a separate bundle of exclusive features. As one guide put it, it adds capacity and a faster service tier.

The Pro Lineup Compared

PlanPriceUsage vs. PlusUltrafast
Plus$201xNo
Pro 100$1005xNo
Pro 200$20010x from Oct 30 (was 20x)No
Pro 500$50025xYes

Notice the pattern: every Pro tier works out to roughly $20 per 1x of Plus usage. Pro 500 is not a bulk discount. You pay the same rate per unit of usage as on the lower tiers, with Ultrafast access on top.

Understanding Ultrafast

OpenAI says Ultrafast generates GPT-6 Astra tokens up to 8x faster than Standard mode in Codex, at about 300 tokens per second. That’s a big difference when you’re waiting on long coding runs.

The trade-off is the usage meter:

  • Ultrafast uses your included allowance at 8x the Standard rate
  • Fast mode (a cheaper option) uses it at 2.5x
  • Paid credits are charged at 6x for Ultrafast

The math looks like this:

ModeEffective allowance on Pro 500
Standard speed25x Plus
Fast modeabout 10x Plus
Ultrafast all weekabout 3x Plus of Astra work

So if you run everything on Ultrafast, your $500 buys less total Astra work than Pro 100 does at Standard speed (5x Plus). It arrives much faster, but there’s less of it.

Some early users reported the effect in practice. One said a single 2-minute Ultrafast request used about 2% of their weekly limit. Another said a coding task that took 23 minutes with Claude Opus 5.5 finished in under 5 minutes on Ultrafast but used roughly 7% of the weekly limit. These are anecdotes, not benchmarks.

Weekly limits apply, though OpenAI says there is no five-hour limit on Pro 200 or Pro 500.

What Happened to Pro 200

The launch came with a controversial change. Starting October 30, 2026, the $200 plan’s included usage in ChatGPT Work and Codex falls from 20x to 10x Plus, and its GPT-6 Pro allowance in Chat drops from 200 to 100 messages per week. Subscribers active around the cutoff keep the old allowance through October 29. After that, reports say they receive a one-time credit grant worth $2,500 that expires on December 31, 2026.

That makes the $500 tier look like a forced upgrade to some users, and critics argue OpenAI should pass efficiency gains on instead of asking $500 for what $200 used to provide. OpenAI argues that cheaper, more efficient models let subscribers do more work even with a smaller allowance.

Credits bought on Pro 100 or Pro 200 do not unlock Ultrafast. It remains Pro 500 only, though API users can access it at low rate limits.

Who Should Buy Pro 500

Good fit:

  • Developers running Codex continuously through the day
  • Pro 200 users who repeatedly hit their limits and lose time to the cutoff
  • People whose time is expensive and who spend hours waiting for generation
  • Teams prototyping on OpenAI’s agent stack who need fast responses

Poor fit:

  • Casual and moderate ChatGPT users
  • Anyone whose bottleneck is the weekly allowance and not speed (Ultrafast makes that worse)
  • People whose work is mostly tool execution and testing, where generation speed isn’t the slow part

A quick break-even check

The jump from Pro 200 to Pro 500 costs $300 more per month. As an illustration, if your time is worth $75 an hour, Ultrafast needs to save you about 4 hours a month to pay for itself. Swap in your own hourly value and your own estimate of waiting time.

Cheaper Alternatives

OptionPriceWhy consider it
ChatGPT Pro 100$1005x Plus at Standard speed; often the better value
ChatGPT Pro 200$20010x Plus after Oct 30; plus credits for overflow
Claude Max 20x$20020x Pro usage from Anthropic
Google AI Ultra$99.99 or $199.995x or 20x Google AI Pro, plus storage and extras
OpenAI APIPay as you goUltrafast available at low rate limits; costs scale with use

If speed is your only issue, test whether the API’s Ultrafast works for your workload before committing to $500 a month.

How to Decide

  1. Measure first. Check your usage page for a week. If you aren’t hitting weekly limits, don’t upgrade.
  2. Try credits. On Pro 200, buying credits for overflow work can be cheaper than moving up a tier, though it won’t give you Ultrafast.
  3. Use Ultrafast selectively. Reserve it for tasks where waiting is costly and run routine work at Standard speed to preserve your allowance.
  4. Monthly billing means low risk. You can try Pro 500 for a month and drop back down if the numbers don’t work.

Pro 500 is a speed product with a bigger allowance attached. It delivers real benefits for a narrow group of heavy developers, but at $20 per unit of Plus usage it offers no discount, and running Ultrafast all day shrinks its effective allowance to about 3x Plus. For nearly everyone else, Plus, Pro 100 or a competitor’s $100 plan gives better value. Keep your current plan, measure a week of usage and upgrade only if limits and wait times are costing you real time.
